Jesse Helms would almost certainly not enjoy Zoë Charlton’s commentary on the black female experience. The Baltimore-based artist’s juxtapositions of banal middle-class symbols (such as the picket fence) with sexually charged imagery are disturbing and beautiful, but it isn’t always clear what the viewer is supposed to take away from them.
